WINDER — Outdoor enthusiasts looking to burn a little elbow grease for a good cause are urged to visit Fort Yargo State Park on Saturday.
Park officials are partnering with national outfitter REI to spruce up Fort Yargo in recognition of National Public Lands Volunteer Day, the second community clean-up at the park this year. • What: Fort Yargo, National Public Lands Volunteer Day • When: 8 a.m. Sept. 25 • Where: 210 S. Broad St., Winder • Cost: Free; lunch provided • For more information: Call the park office at 770-867-3489 The objective is to tidy up mountain bike and hiking trails, clean up the lakeshore and repair erosion sites. Volunteers should come equipped with gloves, shovels, loppers or any other tools that might aide in beautifying green space, Ft. Yargo officials said. The event begins at 8 a.m. and should wrap up by 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. There are no age restrictions. Leaders are seeking as many volunteers as possible. The clean-up follows a similar effort at Fort Yargo in March, the Trail Volunteer Day, that leaders promoted as a mass spring cleaning. Fort Yargo encompasses 18 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails on 1,816 acres. It includes a scenic trail around the 260-acre lake.More like this story
