Former Tech back Burns to speak at North

Joe Burns, a former star running back at Georgia Tech and at Thomas County Central, will be the featured speaker at a seminar today at North Gwinnett High School.

The NCSA Athletic Recruiting event will focus on what it takes to become a collegiate athlete and it will be held in North’s theater at 7 p.m. It is open to athletes, parents and coaches. For more information, visit www.ncsasports.org.

Dawes, Bergfors signed by Thrashers for season

ATLANTA — The Thrashers have signed unrestricted free agent forward Nigel Dawes, who had 32 points for the Calgary Flames last season.

The 25-year-old left winger scored 14 goals and added 18 assists in 66 games with the Flames.

The Thrashers also on Monday re-signed forward Niclas Bergfors, who had a combined 44 points with Atlanta and New Jersey last season. The 23-year-old winger came to Atlanta as part of the deal that sent Ilya Kovalchuk to the Devils.

Dawes has 83 points in 199 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, Phoenix and Calgary.

Stafford won’t need surgery on shoulder

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Matthew Stafford’s injured right shoulder won’t need surgery.

Schwartz said Monday there’s no timetable on Stafford’s return.

The second-year quarterback was knocked out of the season opener when Chicago’s Julius Peppers sacked him Sunday.

Stafford said after the game he would try to play in Week 2 at home against Philadelphia.
