Trial to start for shooting suspect

LAWRENCEVILLE — One of the men believed to be involved in the 2008 drug-related shooting at a local bowling alley will face trial this week.

On August 13, 2008, police say Benjamin Lamar Adams and Leroy Antwon Backman were involved in a botched drug deal outside Brunswick Zone on Lawrenceville Highway.

Adams — scheduled for trial this week — was the reported driver of the getaway car after Backman shot a victim inside his vehicle. Adams allegedly attempted to run over a Lilburn police officer near the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway and Beaver Ruin Road while the officer shot at the car.

Police said Adams the crashed the Chevy Impala into a concrete median at the corner of Rockbridge Road and Five Forks-Trickum Road before being caught after a brief foot chase.

Adams, a Clarkston resident, faces felony charges of aggravated assault and aggravated assault upon a peace officer.
