Iran postpones releasing of American hiker
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran on Friday postponed the planned release of an American woman jailed along with two friends for more than a year, state media reported, dealing a blow to the hopes of three U.S. mothers who have pleaded for the trio’s release.
Iranian officials had said that Sarah Shourd, who was detained with her friends near Iran’s border with Iraq, would be released today. But the IRNA state news agency quoted the deputy chief of communication for the Iranian president’s office, Mohammed Hassan Salilhimaram, as saying that would not happen.
He said details of the decision would be announced later, but Tehran’s chief prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, blamed the fact that ‘‘judicial procedures have not been done,’’ according to the semiofficial ILNA news agency.
25 killed in drug shootings
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Mexican authorities said 25 people were killed in a series of drug-gang shootings in Ciudad Juarez, marking the deadliest day in three years for the border city.
Prosecutors’ spokesman Arturo Sandoval said that in the worst attack, gunmen burst into a house and killed two young men — then killed four other people just for being witnesses.
Sandoval spoke Friday about the death toll Thursday. He said it was the deadliest day in three years in the city across the border from El Paso, Texas.
Ciudad Juarez has become one of the world’s most dangerous cities amid a battle for drug trafficking routes between the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels.
Man arrested after blast
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Police detained a man and sealed off central parts of the Danish capital Friday after a minor explosion in a Copenhagen hotel, a police spokesman said.
The man, of foreign origin, had slight injuries on his face and arms. He was arrested in a park near the site of the blast, spokesman Henrik Moeller Jacobsen said. The cause of the explosion was unclear.
‘‘Whether it’s terror or a mad man’s work, we don’t know,’’ Moeller Jacobsen said. ‘‘We hope and believe that the person is the one who ran away from the hotel.’’
