DACULA — Accident investigators have charged an Auburn man with vehicular homicide in a weekend crash that killed a motorbike rider.
Police on Tuesday arrested Stephen Ventress, 22, on charges of second-degree homicide by vehicle, a misdemeanor, in addition to traffic charges for failing to maintain a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the roadway. Investigators believe Ventress was driving east in a Subaru Forester on Saturday morning when he crossed the center lines while negotiating a curve on Ga. Highway 8, or Winder Highway, near Dacula. The vehicle collided head-on with Winder resident Roger Shimmin, 59, who was headed the opposite direction, police said. Shimmin was operating a moped at the time, according to arrest warrants. Shimmin, who was ejected, died at the scene of the 6 a.m. collision near the highway’s intersection with Franklin Drive, police said. Ventress posted $11,600 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on Wednesday.More like this story
