Local creates website for community to connect with neighbors

HOSCHTON — When Wayne Strickland moved into the Village at Deaton Creek, he was less than impressed with the active adult community’s website.

So Strickland, who has worked in web development for 10 years, decided to do something about it.

“I decided to give my education and my time and software free to make the homeowners’ association website what it could be,” he said.

Strickland created a social networking site that would allow residents of the Village at Deaton Creek to connect with their neighbors and find activities to participate in. The website has a message board accessible only to registered users and content such as local news, health articles and coupons from area businesses. He named it the Deaton Creek Beacon.

That community service project has turned into a business, Beacon HOA Enterprises Inc., owned by Strickland’s wife, Lori English, and Garol Orr, who is married to the mayor of Braselton.

“(The website) fits well in a large community like this where they offer many things,” Orr said. “It brings everything together under one umbrella.”

Orr said the website is funded by the sale of advertisements.

“It’s an opportunity to do more targeted, local advertising,” she said.

The business is designed so a Beacon website can be given to homeowners’ associations with 500 homes or more. A website for Chateau Elan, located near the Village at Deaton Creek, is almost ready to launch.

Strickland said a Beacon website can be set up for smaller HOAs, but because they don’t have the numbers to support the necessary ad revenue, the company will charge a fee for the website startup.
