The Parkview High School marching band recently won several awards, including grand champion with the highest overall score of 94, at the Golden River Marching Festival on Oct. 16 in Tallapoosa.

Additionally, the color guard and the drum majors received the highest scores in the competition. The color guard was the sweepstakes winner with a score of 95.5 and the drum majors were the sweepstakes winners with a score of 97.

The band also placed first in its class in band, color guard and drum major.

Gwinnett students participate in Atlanta Partnership Run/Walk

Students from Parkview High School, Trickum Middle School and the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology were among the more than 7,000 people who participated in the Atlanta Partnership Run/Walk to demonstrate their support for ending global poverty.

The Partnership Walk, now in its 16th year, is an event held annually in major cities across the United States. The walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation USA to raise awareness and funds to alleviate global poverty and promote partnership between America and the developing world.

The Run/Walk raised about $1.3 million and brought together families, friends, students and leaders in government, business, media and the arts for a day of learning activities, fundraising and culturally diverse performances. All of the funds raised at the Partnership Walk go directly to the projects supported by the Foundation.

The 2010 Atlanta Partnership Run/Walk was held at Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. In addition to the traditional 1-kilometer walk, the event featured a 5K, a 1K run for children ages 7 to 13, and a 100-yard dash for children 6 and under.

Eighth-graders go on field trip to get motivated for high school

Radloff Middle School's eighth-graders took a field trip Thursday to Meadowcreek High School.

The visit was designed to motivate students and get them excited about high school.

Students began the trip by gathering in Meadowcreek's gym, where they watched performances by the marching band, dance team, color guard and cheerleaders. After getting pepped up, the eighth-graders toured the school they will attend next year.

Later this year, the students will take field trips to area colleges.
