BUFORD -- The Mall of Georgia is expecting snow Saturday.
The unseasonably chilly precipitation will come courtesy of the mountain city of Gatlinburg, Tenn. While the two tons of snow will be man-made, it will still serve its purpose: To offer Gwinnett residents an opportunity for fun and promote the activities Gatlinburg has to offer.
Those who attend the free event can slide down a snow mountain or watch as athletes demonstrate skiing and snowboarding on a rolling ski deck in the mall parking lot.
"We can do just about everything on this rolling deck that you can do on real snow," said John Cossaboom, winter sports director for Ober Gatlinburg, a ski resort and amusement park in the Tennessee city.
During the promotional event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, those who attend can also enter to win giveaways from Gatlinburg's tourism partners, including a two-night cabin stay and attractions passes. The event will also feature a taste of Gatlinburg with free hot chocolate, fudge samples and mountain taffy. All event attendees will receive special offers and discounts in Gatlinburg just for attending.
"Our goal is to be able to let the folks in Atlanta know everything that Gatlinburg has to offer," Cossaboom said. "It's such an easy drive to be able to get here from the Atlanta area."
