Pastor wins car for canceling Quran burning

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Car dealer Brad Benson made the pitch to Florida pastor Terry Jones in one of his quirky radio ads: If you don’t burn a Quran, I’ll give you a new car.

He was surprised, though, when a representative for Jones called to collect the 2011 Hyundai Accent, retailing for $14,200.

‘‘They said unless I was doing false advertising, they would like to arrange to pick up the car,’’ Benson recalled. At first he thought it was a hoax, so Benson asked Jones to send in a copy of his driver’s license. He did.

Jones, of Gainesville, Fla., told The Associated Press that the free car wasn’t the reason he called off the burning — and that he didn’t even hear about the offer until a few weeks after Sept. 11, when he had threatened to set the Muslim holy book on fire.

He said he plans to donate the car to an organization that helps abused Muslim women.

Teenager who strangled brother gets life in prison

RISING SUN, Ind. — An Indiana teenager who admitted he strangled his 10-year-old brother and told police he identified with a TV serial killer was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole.

Andrew Conley, 18, showed no emotion as a judge sentenced him for the Nov. 28 murder of his brother, Conner. But the teenager wept as he was led out of the courtroom.

Judge James Humphrey could have sentenced Conley to life in prison without parole or to a lesser term of 45 to 65 years. But Humphrey said Conner’s age outweighed any other factors such as mental illness.

“He deserved life, and that’s what he got,” said Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard.

Defense attorney John Watson said Conley would appeal the sentence.

“He was a 17-year-old boy and there was evidence of mental illness. It seems to me that some of that could be interpreted differently by different folks,” he said.

Brandon was given a ticket for $1,103.

Soldier says he was ordered to destroy video

FORT HOOD, Texas — A soldier who recorded the terror of last year’s deadly shooting rampage in Fort Hood using his cell phone was ordered by an officer to delete both videos, a military court heard Friday.

Under cross examination, Pfc. Lance Aviles told an Article 32 hearing that his noncommissioned officer ordered him to destroy the two videos on Nov. 5, the same day a gunman unleashed a volley of bullets inside a processing center at the Texas Army post.

The footage could have been used as evidence at the military hearing to decide if Maj. Nidal Hasan should stand trial in the shootings. The 40-year-old American-born Muslim has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

East Manchester Township acquired the house and the property it sits on so it can eventually expand its municipal building. But rather than tear down the house, township officials are offering it to anyone who wants to move it.
