LAWRENCEVILLE -- A Gwinnett judge has sentenced two drivers involved in a January 2008 crash that killed three people to prison terms.
A Gwinnett Superior Court jury acquitted Lawrenceville resident Darcy Hicks on vehicular homicide charges Thursday. He was convicted, however, of DUI, reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and was sentenced Friday to serve six months in prison, said Assistant District Attorney Jon Setzer.
Another driver's sentence was much lengthier.
Prosecutors said Sia Johnson, of Lawrenceville, was driving the vehicle in which three people were killed. She pleaded guilty Oct. 1 to vehicular homicide charges and was sentenced to serve 12 years, Setzer said.
Both Johnson and Hicks were driving intoxicated at the time, after leaving the same party, Setzer said.
Two passengers in the 2000 Lincoln LS that Johnson was driving -- Alvina Kemoh, 26, of Duluth, and Nikie Ankarah, 32, of Lawrenceville -- were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where they later died. A third passenger, Alvanelle Joseph, 24, of Lawrenceville, died at the scene.
The crash happened about 6:30 a.m. Jan. 28 on a two-lane stretch of Paper Mill Road near Lawrenceville.
Hicks, driving a 1994 Lexus ES 300, passed the Lincoln, lost control and struck an oncoming mini-van before trying to leave the scene, police said at the time. The van's lone occupant was not injured.
That crash happened almost immediately before the Lincoln crashed, Setzer said.
