NORCROSS -- Police on Thursday identified two men killed last weekend when their vehicle struck a Gwinnett County Transit shuttle bus head-on.
The accident occurred Saturday night on Beaver Ruin Road at Beaver Falls Drive. A Red Pontiac Firebird collided with another car, crossed the median and crashed head-on into the transit vehicle, police said.
The impact killed the driver, Marco Aurelio Sangiacomo-Basile, 44, of Duluth, and passenger, Jose Edodio Barran Zuniga, 35, of Doraville.
Norcross police investigating the incident had difficulty reaching the victims' families and withheld their names until Thursday.
The bus' driver, the only person on board, was not seriously injured. The vehicle itself is likely totaled, police said.
Minutes before the crash, a Gwinnett police officer had attempted to stop the Firebird near Buford Highway and Mitchell Road for suspicious activity.
The officer told investigators the driver stopped on Mitchell Road then sped away. The officer gave chase, but turned off the emergency lights near Beaver Ruin Road.
Police believe the driver lost control of the Firebird moments later and crashed.
