STATE SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Mill Creek sweeps tight doubleheader

MARIETTA -- Mill Creek won two one-run games to advance past Walton in the first round of the Class AAAAA state sectional playoffs Wednesday.

The Hawks (24-6) won the first game 2-1 and then scored a 5-4 win in Game 2. They will face Brookwood (No. 1, Region 8) in the second round next Wednesday, with the winner advancing to the state quarterfinals in Columbus.

Mill Creek took the lead for good in Game 1 when Jenna Holland scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Nikki Sagermann drove in the other run with a double. She was 1-for-1 with three walks.

Caroline Wilson (10-3) earned the win. She pitched six-plus innings, allowing nine hits. Lauren Kaczynski pitched a scoreless seventh for her first save of the season.

Kaczynski (9-3) was the winning pitcher of Game 2. She pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run.

The Hawks overcame four errors and two runs in the fifth inning when Sagermann drove in three runs with a triple in the bottom of the sixth. Jackee West was 1-for-2.

Archer advances with road sweep

CUMMING -- Archer easily swept its first round doubleheader, beating North Forsyth 10-2 in Game 1 and 7-1 in Game 2.

The Tigers (No. 3, Region 8) will play Collins Hill (No. 1, Region 7) in the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAAA playoffs next Wednesday. The winner moves onto the state quarterfinals in Columbus.

Alliyah Williams (8-3) struck out six and allowed four hits to earn the win in Game 1. Jenna Graham was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lynsey Folkerts (1-for-4) added three RBIs, while Abby Lyall (2-for-3) knocked in two runs and scored two.

In Game 2, Madison Wyngaert (6-2) pitched a complete game. She allowed seven hits to go with seven strikeouts. Alesha Mann (1-for-3) and Katie Etheridge (0-for-1) each scored twice. Graham (1-for-2) added a run and a stolen base.

Duluth knocked out in first round

CANTON -- Duluth was eliminated in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs by Cherokee. The Wildcats (15-16) lost the first game 6-4 and fell 5-4 in eight innings in the second.

In Game 1, Sam Metzler was 2-for-4, while Gracie Delorenzo and Jennie Perrucci each went 1-for-3. Perrucci was the losing pitcher.

Elanna Worthy went 4-for-4 in Game 2, while Erin Lipps (2-for-4) hit a two-run homer. Maggie Kooker picked up the loss.

The Warriors will play host Grayson in the second round next Wednesday.

Parkview splits first-round doubleheader

MILTON -- The Panthers (19-9, No. 4, Region 8) earned in a split with Milton in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs Wednesday, dropping the opener 5-3 but rallying to win 6-1 in Game 2.

Game 3 is today at 5 p.m. at Milton. The winner advances to play either North Gwinnett (No. 2, Region 7) or Lassiter (No. 3 Region 5) next Wednesday in the Sweet 16.

Amanda Chambers (14-5) was the winning pitcher in Game 2, striking out five in five innings. Caitlin McClure fanned four in two scoreless innings of relief. Chambers was also 3-for-3 at the plate. So was Sarah McFall, who added three RBIs. Katie Block was 3-for-4.

Chambers gave up one earned run in six, but got the loss in Game 1. Chambers, Taylor Fleming and Sara Coker each had a hit.

Buford has no issues in first-round sweep

BUFORD -- Buford had no problems with Dawson County, winning the opener 6-0 and taking Game 1 10-1 in five innings in the first round of the Class AA playoffs Wednesday.

The Wolves (26-4, No. 1, Region 6) will host Dade County (No. 2, Region 7) in the second round next Wednesday.

Game 1 starter Melissa Dickie (12-3) threw her fifth shutout and 11th complete game of the season. She allowed four hits and struck out five and also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Kodi Ricketson (2-for-3) drove in three runs and scored twice. Madyson Wynegar (2-for-4) added an RBI, while Kallie Case (2-for-4) scored one run and swiped two bases.

Karly Fullem (12-1) pitched her 12th complete game in the nightcap. She allowed five hits and fanned seven. Wynegar (1-for-3) hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning. Lexi Overstreet (2-for-3) had two RBIs and a double. Dickie (2-for-3) and Fullem (3-for-3) each had an RBI.

GAC eliminates Fannin Co.

NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian advanced to the second round of the Class AA playoffs with two 7-4 wins over Fannin County on Wednesday.

The Spartans (21-13, No. 2, Region 6) will face either Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (No. 1, Region 7) or Temple (No. 4, Region 5) next Wednesday.

Sarah Armstrong (12-8) threw a complete game to get the win in Game 1. She allowed five hits and one earned run.

Armstrong did not make it out of the first inning in Game 2, but Brianna Stewart (7-5) allowed one run in 62/3 innings of relief to earn the win.

Armstrong went 4-for-6 at the plate in the series and scored three times and drove in a run. Krista Gustafson was also 4-for-6. and scored three times and had three RBIs.

Christine Young added three doubles, while Mary Johnson scored three runs as a pinch runner.

Providence easily advances past Lincoln Co.

LILBURN -- Providence made quick work of Lincoln County, beating the Red Devils 9-0 in five innings and 12-2, also in five innings, in the first round of the Class A state playofs Wednesday.

The Stars (22-10-2) will host either Bowdon or George Walton in the second round next Wednesday. The winner advances to the state quarterfinals in Columbus.

Kylie Kleinschmidt (18-8) was the winning pitcher in both games for the Stars, striking out 15 in a two-hit shutout in Game 1 and allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking out four in two innings in Game 2. MacKenzie Tuttle pitched three hitless innings of relief, striking out three.

Kleinschmidt also controlled the series at the plate with two hits and two RBIs in both games.

In Game 1, Lauren Eggert was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Tuttle also had two hits and an RBI.

In Game 2, Brittany Tuttle drove in three runs with two doubles.

Bethany Smith (1-for-1) drove in a run and scored twice. Katie Beals was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Wesleyan ousted

MACON -- Wesleyan was knocked out of the Class A playoffs by First Presbyterian Day in the first round Wednesday dropping Game 1 by a 5-3 score and falling 5-2 in Game 2.

CaraMia Tsirigos went 3-for-3 with three singles in Game 1 and hit a two-run homer in Game 2. She was intentionally walked three times in the series.

Caitlin Crabill and Victoria DiStasi each had a hit in Game 1 for the Wolves (20-9), with DiStasi driving in a run.

Brittany Mitchell (20-9) was the losing pitcher in both games. She allowed 19 hits in 13 innings and struck out three.

The Vikings will play either Prince Avenue Christian or North Cobb Christian in the Sweet 16.

Hebron swept by Gordon Lee

CHICKAMAUGA -- The Lions finished the season at 12-13 after dropping 8-0 and 9-1 decisions to the top-ranked Trojans on Wednesday.

Brooke Crosby went a combined 2-for-6 for the series to lead Hebron, while Hannah Atkinson, Emily Helton and Amanda Fiscels each were 1-for-3 in Game 2.

Heather Felt took the loss in the opener, while Kaylin Brooks was the losing pitcher for the nightcap.

North rallies for split

SUWANEE -- The Bulldogs bounced back from an opening 9-1 loss to Lassiter to defeat the Trojans 13-1 nightcap to set up a third and deciding game at 5 p.m. today at North.

Alaina Hall was the winning pitcher in Game 2, giving up just one unearned run with seven strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
