Gwinnett police guns swiped in car break-in

LAWRENCEVILLE -- A thief who broke into a Gwinnett police officer's vehicle walked away with two county-issued handguns and a police badge, authorities said Monday.

Atlanta police are trying to locate two 9 mm handguns, a Gwinnett police badge, a knife and other items that belonged to a member of the Gwinnett County Police Department's special investigations section.

The break-in occurred late Friday night at the officer's Atlanta home, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

The targeted vehicle was unmarked and is used in undercover investigations. It's possible the thief was unaware it belonged to police, Ritter said.

"In general, the public should be alarmed that a bad guy has weapons, and they have a badge identifying themselves (as police)," Ritter said. "Hopefully we can get them behind bars."

Ritter withheld the officer's name because he works undercover. He was unsure what area of Atlanta the officer lives in.

Atlanta police are investigating.
