Toll lane work set to begin

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Now that the weather has cooled, the HOT work is beginning.

Overnight lane closures are scheduled to begin Monday on a project to convert Gwinnett's high-occupancy vehicle lanes into high-occupancy toll lanes. The project along Interstate 85 from Chamblee-Tucker Road to Old Peachtree Road includes the installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage, mostly in the inside lanes of the interstate.

"If the weather cooperates, crews will be boring under the interstate to run the hundreds of miles of conduit needed for the technology that will operate the express lane system," said Georgia DOT district construction engineer Randall Davis.

Plans for work will change each week, but most lane closures will occur overnights and weekends for the duration of the project.

This week, the schedule is to close the outside lane of I-85 northbound from Pleasant Hill Road to Ga. HIghway 316 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Monday and lasting through Thursday, according to a press release.

The $11.7 million project is being conducted by World Fiber Technologies Inc. of Alpharetta.
