DACULA — Police have charged a Dacula woman with vehicular homicide in a multi-vehicle incident last week that killed a bicyclist.
Ellen Martin, 49, has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide and cited for following too closely in the Nov. 11 incident that killed cyclist Brian Leech, 48, of Dacula. Investigators found that Martin allegedly violated traffic code by driving a GMC Envoy too close to Leech before impact. “Because someone died from her violation, she was additionally charged with homicide by vehicle,” said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter. Leech was thrown from his bicycle and was struck again by a Honda CR-V, police said. He died at the scene. Both vehicles and Leech were heading west on Old Fountain Road, between Apalachee Run Trail and Old Peachtree Road near Dacula, about 5 p.m. Records show Martin was booked at the Gwinnett County Jail and held on $2,600 bond Wednesday. She was released the same day. Police have said Leech was riding close to the right edge of the roadway when he was struck. No other injuries were reported.More like this story
