Swimmer Upchurch commits to UGA

Peachtree Ridge senior Luke Upchurch, who was recruited by some of the nation’s top programs, made a commitment Monday night to the University of Georgia swimming program.

Upchurch, the reigning Daily Post boys swimmer of the year, led the Lions to a state runner-up finish as a junior. He won the Class AAAAA state championships, as well as the county titles, in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke last season.

Buford baseball, softball players college-bound

Buford will host a ceremony Wednesday to honor its baseball and softball players who will sign with college programs.

The group features two baseball players signing with Georgia Tech, Josh Heddinger and Jake Burnette. Teammates Jamie Ritchie (Belmont), Adam Hampton (Piedmont) and Tyler White (Andrew College) also have made college commitments.

Two Wolves also are headed to Georgia Tech for softball — Karly Fullem and Chelsie Thomas. Melissa Dickie is signing with the North Georgia softball program.

Kurdelmeier signs with N.C. State gymnastics

North Gwinnett’s Megan Kurdelmeier, also a diver for two seasons for the Bulldogs, will be honored with a ceremony Wednesday at the high school for signing a letter of intent with the North Carolina State gymnastics program. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. in North’s media center.

GAC to honor college signees

Greater Atlanta Christian will honor three college-bound senior athletes Thursday at 3:20 p.m. in the Long Forum.

The ceremony includes swimmer Elizabeth Freeman, who has committed to Vanderbilt, and golfer Emee Herbert, who has committed to Tusculum College (Tenn.). The group also includes Malcolm Brogdon, who chose the Virginia basketball program.

North grad Brown to sign with USC-Aiken

North Gwinnett grad Wyatt Brown, who plays at Middle Georgia College, will sign a letter of intent today with the South Carolina-Aiken baseball program. He is the son of Bob and Martha Brown.

Bulldogs’ Bulls to sign gymnastics grant

North Gwinnett senior Arielle Bulls will sign a letter of intent with the Southeast Missouri State gymnastics program Wednesday and will be honored with a ceremony today at 4 p.m. at the high school.

A Level 10 gymnast, Bulls also is a four-time regional qualifier, a 2009 Junior Olympic National Invitational qualifier and a 2010 U.S. National Junior Olympic Team qualifier.

Force to hold second tryout

The Georgia Force will hold a second tryout for its new Arena Football League franchise on Dec. 4 at Grovetown High School. Cost is $70 pre-registration or $80 on the day of the event.
