Warriors' Riopel stymies Gladiators

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Nic Riopel carried over his hot streak from last week, stopping 32 of 33 shots to lead Greenville to a 3-1 win over Gwinnett on Friday night at the Bi-Lo Center.

Greenville (4-1-1) scored three unanswered goals over the last two periods after falling behind in the first.

Mike Forney scored his first goal of the season at 16:53 of the first period to give the Gladiators (5-2-2) their only lead of the night. As Matt Francis and Tim Miller got the puck down the right-wing side, Forney beat the defense with his speed and put the puck by Riopel top shelf.

Greenville tied the game early in the second. Chris Morehouse, in his first game with the Road Warriors, fed Brendan Connolley at the far circle and the centerman rifled a shot over rookie goalie Chris Carrozzi’s glove to pull Greenville even at the 2:38 mark.

Justin Bowers gave Greenville its first lead 4:02 into the third, beating Carrozzi high blocker side from the slot to make it a 2-1 game. Gwinnett had two power plays and several opportunities late to tie, but Riopel turned them all away and Marc-Olivier Vallerand chipped in a late tally for a 3-1 final.

Carrozzi played well in a losing cause, making 34 saves.

The Gladiators gave Greenville just one power play, but went 0-for-5 on the man advantage and dropped their second straight game in regulation this season.

Both teams head to Gwinnett for a rematch tonight at 7:05 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
