How to beat the heat this summer

From hockey and gymnastics to archaeology and art, Gwinnett's got summer vacation covered with camps and activities spanning a wide range of interests for kids and teens. Become a pirate, a clown, a wildlife ranger or a space cadet at summer camps hosted by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation. Delve into the arts through painting, drawing and other activities during camps at The Hudgens Center. Splash into summer in one of the 12 pools, both indoor and outdoor, at Gwinnett parks. Here's a sampling of more camps, events and activities to fill the long days of summer.

Beginning May 31 through June 5

The Simon Kidgits Club at Gwinnett Place Mall will host the Red Queen's Iced Tea Party from 5 to 7 p.m. June 1 in the mall's center court. Those who attend are invited to come dressed in attire inspired by "Alice in Wonderland." Beginning June 6 through 12

The Southeastern Railway Museum will host Moms and Tots, a program for children ages 1 to 4 that includes a circle time, songs, activities and a craft, from 10:30 a.m. to noon the second Thursday of every month. The Hudgens Center for the Arts will host Session I of its summer arts camps -- In the Forest -- June 7 through 18 during which campers will take an art-making journey into coniferous, deciduous and rain forests. A teddy bear picnic will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 12 for kids ages 3 to 6 at George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center, 55 Buford Highway in Suwanee. Beginning June 13 through 19

Camp Kidz Fun Zone, a summer camp for children ages 5 to 13, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 14 through 18. HOOKED (Helping Others through Organized Kreative Everyday Differences), a volunteer club for teens, meets from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. the first and third Saturday of every month at the Pinckneyville Community Recreation Center.
