WINDER -- Summer at Fort Yargo State Park kicks off with a bevy of activities in coming weeks, beginning with the famed Dirty Spokes Duathlon on Saturday.
Winder's 1,800-acre park continues to offer perennial favorites for outdoor enthusiasts. Among them: the 260-acre lake with a public beach; 40 different campsites (from $25 to $28) and an 18-hole disc golf course ($2).
But three upcoming events between now and June 5 signal that summer has basically -- if not technically -- arrived:
* Dirty Spokes Duathlon:
8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Participants will run-bike-run Fort Yargo's wooded and hilly trails. Fees apply. For more information, contact 770-867-3489 or visit www.dirtyspokes.com.
* Memorial Day Campfire:
7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. To commemorate summer's arrival, the park will provide participants with marshmallows and hot dogs for roasting. Leaders ask the public to meet at the campground number 1 amphitheater.
* Siege Yargo TrailBlazer Race:
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 5. Racers in teams of three will paddle, run, mountain bike and face other challenges through Yargo's trails. Public invited.
Parking fees of $5 apply to all events. For more information on the latter two events, call the park at 770-867-3489.
