Rape charges imposed after Internet encounter

SNELLVILLE -- An encounter on a social networking site jogged painful memories for a 21-year-old woman, who came forward to Snellville police this week with an account of years-long abuse and rape.

The victim told police during interviews Tuesday that she was molested and raped for years by Snellville resident Fayette Gittens, 55, the father of her friend, said Snellville police Chief Roy Whitehead.

Gittens recently contacted the alleged victim via a networking site, "and it stirred all this up," Whitehead said. "That caused her to come forward."

Police did not specify which site Gittens allegedly used.

The alleged abuse happened from the time the victim was age 8 until she was about 15, beginning in 1997, at Gittens' Twin Springs Drive home, police said. She no longer lives in Snellville, Whitehead said.

The Gwinnett Daily Post does not identify alleged victims in sexual abuse cases.

Gittens, who is unemployed, is married with one daughter, Whitehead said. Investigators continue to search for other possible victims, he said.

Gittens remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond, charged with rape and two counts of aggravated child molestation.
