Officials to honor improvements of US Highway 78 on Saturday

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Officials will celebrate the "extreme makeover" of U.S. Highway 78 with an event Saturday.

The "re-grand opening" marks the end of a $33 million construction project to remove the highway's reversible lanes, add a median and an additional lane and many aesthetic improvements from Snellville to Stone Mountain.

With speakers such as U.S. Rep. John Linder and Chairman Charles Bannister, leaders from the Evermore Community Improvement District plan to congratulate businesses for improving the corridor as well as launch a new phase of revitalization with a project being studied to retool the Stone Mountain Olympic tennis venue.

The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the tennis center, located at 5525 Bermuda Road, near the intersection of West Park Place and U.S. 78.
