Mill Creek’s Weathers signs with Augusta State

Mill Creek senior Jac’ Weathers signed a letter of intent Wednesday afternoon with the Augusta State women’s basketball program. She is the daughter of Milton and Joh’ny Weathers.

Weathers was the Hawks’ second-leading scorer and rebounder as a senior, helping the team to a third straight Region 7-AAAAA title, a 26-5 record and to the Class AAAAA Elite Eight. Her sister Monique plays basketball at Benedict College (S.C.).

Berkmar’s Murry signs with Erie

Berkmar senior Jordan Murry has signed a letter of intent to play football for Erie Community College (N.Y.).

Murry, recruited as a wide receiver, played receiver, wildcat formation quarterback and returned kicks and punts for Berkmar. He played in the Rivalries of Gwinnett All-Star Game as a senior.

Generals’ Black, Watson commit to colleges

Shiloh seniors Raven Black and Devotion Watson have accepted offers to play college volleyball. Black will sign a letter of intent Friday with Talladega College (Ala.), while Watson has signed with Kansas State Community College.

Black and Watson, four-year members of the Generals’ volleyball program, led Shiloh to a Region 8-AAAAA runner-up finish and to the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs as seniors.

‘Prep Rally’ features soccer titles

“Gwinnett Prep Rally,” a Gwinnett County high school sports TV program, airs soccer state championship highlights of North Gwinnett-Northview girls and Collins Hill-Northview boys as well as soccer semifinal highlights from Parkview-Northview girls, Greater Atlanta Christian-Walker girls and Collins Hill-Milton boys on this week’s show. GPR will also recap second-round action from the state baseball playoffs.

Westlake’s Thornton picks UGA

ATLANTA — Marcus Thornton says he is coming to Georgia, giving coach Mark Fox a big name for his 2010-11 freshman class.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Thornton, who led Atlanta’s Westlake High School to a state championship, was released from his letter of intent with Clemson after coach Oliver Purnell left for DePaul. Thornton says he picked Georgia over Georgia Tech, Alabama and Texas.

He averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds as a senior. He also is a strong shot-blocker.

Georgia’s top players last season, Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie, are returning next season after considering leaving school early for the NBA.

Thrashers sign drafted goalies

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Thrashers signed drafted goaltenders Edward Pasquale and Chris Carrozzi on Wednesday. Pasquale was the the team’s fourth-round selection in 2009 and Carozzi went in 2008’s sixth round selection.

Pasquale, 19, appeared in 51 games last season with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League, posting a 27-17-5 record with one shutout, a 3.17 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

Carrozzi, 20, who was named the 2009-10 Canadian Hockey League and OHL Goaltender of the Year, appeared in 37 games with Mississauga, posting a 19-10-5 record with five shutouts, a 2.36 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

Dream waive Holdsclaw

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Dream waived forward Chamique Holdsclaw on Wednesday and center Yelena Leuchanka joined the team.

Holdsclaw requested a trade prior to training camp and did not report to the team. The team actively pursued a trade per Holdsclaw’s request but was unsuccessful.
