LOCAL EVENT: Suwanee to hold Arts in the Park

This year's Arts in the Park festival is all about the creative processes that go into making artwork.

As a festival that showcases the talents of painters, potters, woodworkers, doll makers and other artists, finished products will still be on display and available for purchase, but the almost 40 participating artists have been asked to demonstrate their crafts for those who attend this year's event.

The artists' market will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

"We've asked as many of our artists as possible to demonstrate their art," said events coordinator Amy Doherty. "We think that people will have a deeper level of appreciation for the time and creativity invested into these pieces when they actually see them coming together over the course of the day."

Festival-goers can lend their own creative talents to a chalk art competition, which will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and is open to children in pre-K through adults. Participants can compete with their respective age division for a chance to win cash prizes.

Registration forms for the competition are available online at www.suwanee.com or participants can register at the festival by 12:30 p.m.

Performance arts are also part of the festival, with Atlanta-based quartet The Modern Society headlining the musical acts with a blend of classic and contemporary rock and pop melodies. Other acts include an Irish dance troupe, the Gwinnett Horn Quartet, the Gwinnett Choral Guild and the Nate Currin Band. Entertainment will begin at noon and continue throughout the day.

Arts in the Park is sponsored by the Suwanee Arts Partnership, a volunteer-based public arts education and fundraising organization. Any proceeds from this year's festival will support the city's public art initiative.

Festival attendees are also encouraged to support the North Gwinnett Cooperative by bringing along canned goods to donate. The food will be collected at the city of Suwanee tent.
