Family gets displaced in Barrow blaze
WINDER -- An early morning fire Sunday has displaced a family in the 300 block of Stonegate Drive in Winder, officials said.
The fire, reported at 2:05 a.m., primarily struck the home's attic, above a kitchen.
Investigators have traced the origin to the area of an outdoor light over the home's back deck, said Barrow County Emergency Services spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin.
Dakin said the family of three was alerted by smoke alarms prior to evacuating.
"This fire could have been much worse if not for the activation of smoke alarms," Dakin said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
Officials investigating Tucker fire
TUCKER -- Fire authorities are investigating a Sunday blaze that damaged a business in the 2900 block of Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Tucker.
Firefighters responded to a report of a business fire at Catalina Home Loans Inc. about 4 p.m. and had the flames controlled in about a half-hour, said Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.
Crews found heavy smoke showing from the roof of the single-story, wood frame and brick structure on arrival, he said.
The business was not open at the time, and no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, Rutledge said.
