Presidential Appointee and Credit Union Pioneer with 52 years of service Mrs. Eloise A. Woods, age 83, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Woods. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Mickey Woods Merkel, her son-in-law, Mr. Tom Merkel, and her two granddaughters, Ashley T. Merkel and Kelly W. Merkel. Ms. Woods was born in Okeechobee, FL and graduated from Florida Southern College where she earned her degree in accounting. She moved to Atlanta, where she met her future husband and was employed in 1947 by The Georgia Telco Credit Union (now Georgia's Own Credit Union). She became General Manager of Georgia Telco Credit Union in 1960. Ms. Woods was a true pioneer in the Credit Union movement serving on many local, state, and national Boards and many times becoming the first woman to hold those positions. Among some of her honors was the serving as Director for such organizations as The Georgia Credit Union League & Affiliates, CUNA, AVAIL, EPL, National Credit Union Foundation, and the Credit Union Executive Society. She was a Founder of the Georgia Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation and National Filene Research Institute. Her greatest professional accomplishment came in 1977 when Ms. Woods was appointed the Chairman of the National Credit Union Administration by President Jimmy Carter. This position led to her participation in the People-to-People Credit Union Partnership between the United States, Poland, and Russia. Ms. Woods retired from Georgia Telco Credit Union in 1999 as President/CEO after Fifty-Two (52) years of service. A graveside Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 22nd at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. The Reverend Ceci Duke of Christ Episcopal Church, Norcross, GA, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to -The Center for Visually Impaired ( ) or The IMPACT Group ( ) or a charity of your choice, in memory of Ms. Woods.
