SUWANEE -- When Rick Davis walked into the Georgia SPCA in January 2009, he told staff there he wanted to adopt the dog no one else wanted.

A mixed breed canine that appears to have some greyhound and a little shepherd in the mix had been given up for adoption about six weeks after she was born and had bounced from shelter to shelter before arriving at the Suwanee rescue, where she spent 11 months in a crate waiting for her forever home. That all changed when Davis took Penny Lynn home.

Now a year-and-a-half-old and living happily with Davis and his wife Berneta, along with two other rescues, Penny Lynn is the face of a fundraiser organized by the couple to give back to the Georgia SPCA and animals still waiting for their own forever homes.

"What better way to raise awareness than to do a fundraiser for them?" Davis said.

The event, which has been dubbed You Ain't Nothin' but a Pound Dog in honor of the beneficiaries and guest performer Cliff-E, an Elvis tribute artist, will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Suwanee Academy of the Arts. Tickets are $45 each or $80 for a pair and the event will include food, a silent auction, a cash bar and entertainment.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Georgia SPCA and the animals who temporarily call the Suwanee rescue home.

"Other than putting some money in their pocket," Rick Davis said, "I really want to raise awareness in the Suwanee area that they're there. If you're looking for a good pet, you don't need to go out and get a full breed. There are great pets right here in your backyard."

Tickets to the event can be purchased by calling 678-765-2726 or online at www.georgiaspca.org.
