BUFORD -- More than 25 percent of Mall of Georgia businesses were cited for not having business licenses Monday, including reputable national chains like Macy's, Barnes and Noble and LensCrafters.
Even after information was circulated that a compliance check would be conducted, Gwinnett County police spokesman Officer Brian Kelly said 60 of the mall's estimated 225 stores were found to be lacking up-to-date business licenses Monday.
In addition to smaller businesses, big-time retailers were also found to be in violation of ordinances, including Macy's, Barnes and Noble, LensCrafters, Brookstone, The Disney Store, J. Crew, Helzberg Diamonds, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Buckle, Charlotte Russe and PacSun.
In an official statement, the Mall of Georgia said it had no knowledge of the licensing issues prior to the police department's announcement and no responsibility in the matter.
"Any licensing is an agreement between the individual retailer and the county," the statement read. "Mall of Georgia management is in no way involved and has no knowledge of individual agreements made by retailers."
Representatives from several stores could not be reached or declined to comment Tuesday evening.
