Norcross city council adopts green policy

NORCROSS -- City council members voted Monday to adopt a citywide "green" initiative, encouraging city leaders and staff to adopt environmentally friendly practices in two areas.

This effort will help Norcross earn the distinction of being named an Atlanta Regional Commission Green Community.

Connie Weathers, the Sustainable Norcross steering committee chairperson, said Monday "We are primarily focusing on the government items (of the initiative), because we believe that the city should lead by example."

The ARC's Green Community certification involves both governmental and community involvement, but Weathers hopes the city can earn the minimal requirements by garnering the city's participation first. Norcross has to earn a minimum of 175 points out of a possible 400 to become a certified "green" community.

The application deadline is May 14.

Weathers said that the city's fleet of vehicles and its design and construction policies will be the two areas of focus initially. The initiative encourages city employees to purchase the most fuel efficient vehicles with the lowest pollution impact. The Green Building portion of the initiative encourages sustainable planning, design, construction and maintenance of city buildings.

DeKalb and Douglas counties, as well as the cities of Atlanta, Fairburn, Roswell and Suwanee, have already earned their certifications by implementing sustainability practices and policies in categories ranging from energy efficiency and green building to transportation and water efficiency.

Councilman Charlie Riehm thanked Weathers and other committee members for their research and dedication to the project.

Special-use permit approved on Cemetery Street

A special-use permit was granted Monday for property currently zoned C-3 at 75 N. Cemetery St. Business owners Oswald and Dixie Matics plan to operate a computer consulting and repair business in the existing structure. A florist shop formerly operated at that address, but no business has been located there for several months.
