Two Gladiators earn All-Rookie honors

DULUTH — A day after the Gwinnett Gladiators were eliminated from playoff contention, the team's No. 1 defensive pair was recognized for their efforts this season.

Drew Paris and Same Roberts, who played tough minutes all year against everyone's top line, were named to the ECHL All-Rookie team Wednesday.

The six-man team is determined in a vote of league coaches. Also selected were forwards Evan Barlow (Idaho), Justin Donati (Elmira) and Maxime Tanguay (Toledo). The goaltender was Idaho's Richard Bachman.

Paris and Roberts were also recognized at the season's halfway point as Gwinnett's representatives at the All-Star Game in Ontario, Calif. In that game, Roberts scored the American Conference's first goal and added an assist later. Paris had a goal in the third period, which helped his team to a shootout win.

Paris is a 21-year-old rookie from Pointe-Claire, Quebec.

He made his professional debut in five games with the Rochester Americans near the end of last season after completing his fifth junior season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 6-foot-4 blueliner leads all rookie defensemen with 44 points, eight power-play goals and two shorthand goals. His 24 power-play points are tied for third among league rookies. Paris also appeared in one game with AHL Toronto and picked up two assists.

Roberts, a 25-year-old from St. John's, Newfoundland, made his pro debut with the Gladiators this season and has 10 goals and 40 points in 67 games. He is third among first-year defensemen in goals scored and tied for second with 40 points. He has played in two games with AHL Lake Erie.
