  • Location: American Tavern Restaurant and Ale House is along Athens Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 78, between Grayson and Loganville.

  • Hours: 11 a.m. 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday.

  • Owners: Husband-and-wife duo Jim McCarthy and Christine Fleming own the American Tavern in Loganville as well as an Athens restaurant under the same name. McCarthy, who lends his decade of cooking experience to the kitchen at the Loganville location, stepped from the night club industry into the restaurant industry.

  • Atmosphere: The owners of American Tavern have branded the restaurant upscale casual and have created a relaxed atmosphere in which they hope diners will sit and stay awhile. Upon entering the restaurant, a dining area to the left offers booth and table seating, while the bar area to the right offers the same in addition to chairs lining the bar top. A small stage takes up a portion of the bar area, while a patio with wooden picnic tables and metal high-top tables and chairs wraps around the left side of the brick building.

  • Menu: American Tavern prides itself on its hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood and regional American cuisine complemented by made-from-scratch dressings and sauces.

The restaurant's dinner menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, barbecue and more. The most popular dishes are the Fisherman's Platter of grouper, shrimp, a crab cake, cole slaw and fries, and the barbecue ribs, which are smoked in-house.

American Tavern serves up 19 lunch specials -- salads, sandwiches and more -- for $5.99, including chicken Parmesan with penne pasta, Salisbury steak served with mashed potatoes and green beans and pecan-crusted grouper alongside mixed vegetables. The most popular lunch dishes are the country fried chicken, the club sandwich and the French dip.

Diners can wash down their meals with sodas, tea or water or select from 60 bottled beers or 24 drafts on tap. American Tavern boasts 60 different brands of vodka.
