Mr. James Thomas Smith, Sr., age 83, of Carnesville, GA and formerly of Buford, GA passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010. He is survived by: wife of sixty-two years, Dorothy Pass Smith, Carnesville, GA; daughter, Joy Smith Hortman, Buford, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Robbin Smith, Flowery Branch, GA and David and Jane Smith, Flowery Branch, GA; grandchildren, D. J. and Angela Smith, and Brian, Matt, Jimmy and Joy Smith; great granddaughter, Avery Smith; sister, Mary Smith Friedman, Buford, GA; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Bothwell and Mable Pass, Buford, GA, Gladston Mealor, Lawrenceville, GA and Quinton Holland, Buford, GA; sister-in-law, Maxine Pass, Greensboro, GA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Smith was born August 23, 1926. He was a graduate of Flowery Branch High School in Flowery Branch, GA. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in World War II in the South Pacific and he was a member of the Buford American Legion Post 127 and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was owner of Smith Used Trucks. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Buford, GA. He had a love for music and singing and he had sung in various quartets for many years. He and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Carnesville, GA when they retired to enjoy living on their farm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Buford, GA with Rev. Paul Garner officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 3219 Bethlehem Church Road, Buford, GA 30518 in memory of Thomas Smith.
