50 test positive for TB exposure at Lilburn Middle

LILBURN -- Officials say 50 students and faculty members at Lilburn Middle School have tested positive for exposure to tuberculosis during a screening.

The testing was performed by the East Metro Health District last week after two cases of the disease were reported among sixth graders. Principal Gene Taylor sent a letter encouraging parents to allow their children to be tested.

Nearly 360 people were tested on Friday and received their results on Monday.

Suleima Salgado, a spokeswoman for the health district, says the students and teachers who tested positive have been referred for follow-up exams.

Salgado says 97 more students and teachers at the school need to be tested. Health officials are working to contact parents to get permission to administer the screening.
