Fort Yargo State Park wants volunteers Saturday

WINDER -- Barrow residents itching to burn a little elbow grease for a good cause are urged to visit Fort Yargo State Park on Saturday.

Officials have planned another Trail Volunteer Day for March 27 at the spacious Winder park. A mass spring cleaning, you might say.

The community spruce-up begins at 8 a.m. and should conclude at noon. Its focus will be trimming limbs, clearing trails, repairing erosion and cutting roots, according to the park's Web site.

Needed materials: A rake or gas-powered blower, if available. There are no age restrictions.

Leaders are seeking as many volunteers as possible.

The clean-up follows a similar effort at Fort Yargo in September. That event coincided with the Georgia State Park and Historic Sites Free Day event and, on a broader scale, National Public Lands Day.

Fort Yargo encompasses 18 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails on 1,816 acres. It includes a scenic trail around the 260-acre lake.
