Disc Spotlight: Broken Embraces

Broken Embraces (Blu-ray) (R)

Movie: 3 stars out of 4

Disc: 3 1/2 stars out of 4

This fourth collaboration between director Pedro Almodovar and leading lady Penelope Cruz channels Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick into a sneaky smart murder mystery that is more of a well-executed slight-of-hand exercise than an entertaining work of fiction. Bursting with style and vibrant cinematography, the movie is a perfect fit for the crisp, concise and unforgiving Blu-ray presentation. If patience is one of your virtues, repeated viewings will yield increasingly rich rewards.
