Norcross won the Area 2 Weightlifting Championships this past weekend over runner-up Peachtree Ridge.
The Blue Devils had 68 points to Peachtree Ridge's 47. The Lions barely edged third-place South Gwinnett (46) and Mill Creek was fifth. The top three finishers in each age group advance to Saturday's state meet at Hawkinsville.
In the 246-and-up division, Peachtree Ridge's Trevor McBurnett (560 squat, 385 bench, 315 clean) was first and Norcross' Max Garcia (475 squat, 335 bench, 320 clean) was second. McBurnett had the day's top lift total at 1,260 pounds.
Mill Creek's Tyler Cierski won the 226-245 class (550 squat, 275 bench, 295 clean). Peachtree Ridge's Tanner Botts won 206-225 (545 squat, 325 bench, 325 clean).
Norcross' Eric Johnson placed first in 191-205 (510 squat, 310 bench, 295 clean), while Mill Creek's Taylor Coleman was second (480 squat, 295 bench, 270 clean). The Blue Devils also got a win from Arius Wright (405 squat, 305 bench, 315 clean) in the 181-190 class.
South Gwinnett went 1-2 in 171-180 as Wynton Cannady was first (445 squat, 365 bench, 285 clean) and Trevon Walker was second (440 squat, 290 bench, 300 clean).
Peachtree Ridge's Alan Gigolaev was first in 161-170 (360 squat, 280 bench, 255 clean) and South's Jazzin Anderson won 151-160 (380 squat, 270 bench, 255 clean) and Norcross' William Stewart was second (385 squat, 245 bench, 245 clean).
Duluth's Quartez Harper won 141-150 (385 squat, 345 bench, 245 clean) and South's Shaquille Hall was second in 140-and-under (315 squat, 205 bench, 215 clean).
Local lifters making state with third-place finishes were Archer's Andrew Clark, Norcross' Seth Hinsley, Norcross' Kentron Young, Collins Hill's Erick McGee, South's Josh Randolph, Norcross' Darryl Marlow and Mill Creek's Ryan Coleman.
