The 9- and 10-year-old Mill Creek Hawks girls all-star basketball team won the Gwinnett Recreational All-Stars Tournament on Feb. 27.
The Hawks were undefeated for the tournament season and beat North Gwinnett 31-20 for the championship.
Team members are: Katie Kenerly, Rebekah Sims, Micayla Rood, Hannah Renfroe, Megan Robison, Sarah Thomas, Amanda Natsch, Bridget Mukasa, Hanna Mills and Zaniaya Williams. The team is coached by Jamie Sims, Kevin Kenerly and Mitch Rood.
Falcons claim Slugfest title
The 12U Gold Dacula Falcons won the AAA division of the Forsyth County Slugfest NIT, defeating the Powder Springs Sand Gnats 13-5.
The Falcons combined for 48 hits in the tournament, including 13 in the championship game. The Falcons outscored their opponents 40-17.
Team members are: Sam Freitas, Cameron Hankins, Cole Hayes, Corey Johnson, Jack Peebles, Kale Pylant, Dillon Singleton, Peyton Sweat, Cameron Turley and Jack Utley. The team is coached by Chris Hankins, Kent Pylant, Cedric Singleton and Gary Sweat.
Wildcats win Forsyth County Slugfest
The Duluth Wildcats won the 11U USSSA Forsyth County Slugfest, which featured 15 teams from Gwinnett, Cobb, Forsyth, Fulton and Savannah on March 5.
The Wildcats started the tournament 0-2, but won their final four games to claim the championship. They defeated the Sharon Springs Blue (10-6), the West Diamond Dawgs (7-6), North Gwinnett Red (18-0) and Sharon Springs Black (4-3 in the finals).
Team members are: David Brown, Steven Casey, Cam Craport, Myles Deuett, Patrick Hutton, Jabari Meyers, Jamari Meyers, Andres Perez, Kieran Price, Jaelin Sewell, Nate Shirah and Chase Zellers. The team is coached by Luis Cuadrado, Joe Brown, Steve Casey and Cary Zellers.
Wolves claim shootout title
The Buford Wolves won the 9U division of the seventh annual South Gwinnett Shootout March 6-7 in Snellville.
Team members are: Brandon Brittle, Cole Hunter, Blake Hutchins, K.J. Johnson, Reece McIntyre, Zach Mills, Trent Milton, Logan Orr, Spencer Starkweather, Austin Turner and Sergio Vargas. The team is coached by Jason Hutchins, Richard Brittle, Chad McIntyre and Greg Starkweather.
Cartmell sets strikeout record
Hebron Middle School's Matthew Cartmell set the single-game school record for strikeouts with 12 against Bethlehem Christian Academy on March 5.
The seventh-grader entered the game in the third inning and allowed three hits, no walks and helped Hebron come back from a five-run deficit to win 7-5.
Junior Thrashers advance to national tournament
The Duluth Jr. Thrashers U16 ice hockey team, which plays out of the Ice Forum in Duluth, advanced to the national championship tournament in West Chester, Pa.
