LAWRENCEVILLE -- A Lawrenceville home was heavily damaged Monday morning when a fire broke out in the kitchen.
According to reports, firefighters responded to the 1200 block of Monfort Road after a caller reported hearing an explosion and seeing the home engulfed in flames.
Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said firefighters immediately entered the two-story home but were forced back outside by "intense heat and fire conditions."
"They used multiple hose lines to control the fire from outside," Rutledge said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, Rutledge said, and the only injury reported was a minor knee injury suffered by a firefighter.
"He was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for evaluation," Rutledge said. "The firefighter was treated and later released ... he is going to be OK."
Though the blaze appears to have originated in the kitchen, Rutledge said its exact cause is unclear and remains under investigation.
The Red Cross was contacted to help the family -- three adults and five children -- displaced by the damage.
