DULUTH -- A man was killed Saturday night when his motorcycle crashed into a sport utility vehicle near Ga. Highway 120 and Meadow Church Road.
According to police, 30-year-old Fredrick Bowens of Duluth was driving a black 2007 Honda motorcycle west on Duluth Highway about 10:30 p.m. when a 2006 Land Rover, traveling east, made a left turn in front of him.
Gwinnett County police accident investigators and firefighters immediately responded to the scene, where Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said they found Bowens "unconscious and critical."
An ambulance rushed Bowens to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died a short time later, officials said.
No one else was injured in the accident.
A witness said she was driving down Duluth Highway when Bowen's motorcycle sped past her.
"He was going so fast," the woman said. "Immediately after I saw him, I said a little prayer. At the next stop light we saw the smoke ... the bike was in tiny pieces. I ran out of the car and called 911. I just got on my knees and started praying over him."
Police said the driver of the Land Rover failed to yield right of way, but couldn't say what factors played a role in the crash.
"This still remains an active investigation," said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.
