Just off its 2008 Broadway run, the musical "A Catered Affair" has made its way into regional theater right here in Gwinnett.

The Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville will present the first post-Broadway production of the musical beginning this weekend.

"A Catered Affair" is based on American dramatist and novelist Paddy Chayefsky's original teleplay and a film written by Gore Vidal. It was adapted for the stage by Harvey Fierstein, with music and lyrics by John Bucchino, and follows a blue-collar family living in the Bronx in the 1950s as they cope with the recent loss of their only son and their only daughter's impending wedding, an affair that stirs up myriad feelings for all involved.

"There are many beautiful shows that are destined to have a very successful life at the regional level," said Ann-Carol Pence, associate producer and music director. "'A Catered Affair' is the powerful story about really good people and that is not always the type of show that speaks to the cynicism of New York audiences."

In "A Catered Affair," Janey Hurley wants to marry her beau, Ralph, in a small, quick civil ceremony attended by immediate family. When their parents balk at that idea, the wedding becomes a big affair and an even bigger headache for the young couple as tensions flare between anyone and everyone involved.

The Aurora Theatre will present "A Catered Affair" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through March 28 with a matinee showing at 10 a.m. March 24. For tickets, call 678-226-6222 or visit www.auroratheatre.com.
