LAWRENCEVILLE -- By unanimous vote the Lawrenceville City Council on Monday adopted an amendment to its pawn shop ordinance that shifts the licensing and monitoring of pawn shops in the city limits from the county to the city.
"This brings our pawn shop ordinance in line with the county's and enables our police department to start enforcing the ordinance," Mayor Rex Millsaps announced. Gwinnett County had been licensing pawn shops in Lawrenceville, and Gwinnett County Police had been enforcing pawn shop regulations in the city.
The Lawrenceville Police Department will share information on pawned goods with Gwinnett County Police and other agencies to assist in identifying and recovering stolen property, according to Lawrenceville Police Capt. Jeff Smith, who was instrumental in drafting changes to the city's ordinance.
In other action at the meeting, which lasted only 8 minutes and 15 seconds, the council approved change orders on construction of the new police building that reduce the cost by $5,400.
Three consent agenda items were adopted, and several other items were tabled. It was the shortest regular meeting on record since he has been mayor, Millsaps said.
Councilman Mike Crow announced that he was looking into the potential impact on Lawrenceville if Gwinnett County Airport-Briscoe Field is expanded to allow commercial flights. Crow invited residents interested in participating in the study to contact him.
