Berkmar’s Harvey signs with Brenau

Berkmar grad Gabby Harvey, who played basketball last season at Tusculum College (Tenn.), has signed a letter of intent to play for Brenau College in Gainesville.

Harvey, Berkmar’s career steals leader with 317, also played volleyball and ran track for the Patriots. She also was an honor graduate and a HOPE scholar.

Dacula’s Lee qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

Dacula resident Kevin Lee, a golfer at Mill Creek, earned one of five qualifying spots Monday in the upcoming U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Lee shot 72 and 74 at Kennesaw’s Pinetree Country Club, edging Lilburn’s Ted Moon (74-73) for the last qualifying spot. Moon is the first alternate. Valdosta’s Sam Straka (73-66) was the low medalist.

The U.S. Junior Amateur will be held from July 19-24 at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich.

Greene named to all-freshman A-Sun team

Peachtree Ridge grad Ben Greene, who recently completed his freshman golf season at Kennesaw State, was a unanimous selection to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman Team.

One of only two unanimous selections, Greene tied for ninth in the A-Sun Championships and was the top finisher among conference freshmen.

Burger leads by 1 at Georgia Top 60 Classic

AUGUSTA — Mill Creek grad Emilie Burger carded a 4-under-par 69 to take a one-stroke lead over local and former champion Laura Coble at the 29th Georgia Top 60 Women’s Classic at West Lake Country Club.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today.

Starting on No. 10, Burger’s round began with a bogey. But she went on to post four birdies over the next eight holes (11, 12, 14 and 18) to make the turn at 3-under on the par-37 back nine. She bogeyed the 369-yard fifth hole, but recovered with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 for her score of 4-under-par 69.

Burger is a rising sophomore on the University of Georgia golf team and was named a third-team All-America by Golfweek in her freshman season.

Radakovich, Joseph get new deals

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich and women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph have new five-year contracts through 2015.

Radakovich is entering his fifth year at Georgia Tech. Joseph is entering her eighth season.

Radakovich’s new contract comes after Georgia’s Tech’s 2009-10 academic year included an Atlantic Coast Conference championship in football.
