TOLEDO, Ohio — Starter Ryne Reynoso struck out eight batters and the Gwinnett Braves beat Toledo 7-3 in the series opener Tuesday.
The eight K’s were a new Triple-A career high for Reynoso and tie his career-high on every level of minor league baseball. Reynoso earned the second win of the season, allowing only three runs on five hits in his five innings of work. The bullpen — Vladimir Nunez, Cory Gearrin and Stephen Marek — held the Mud Hens scoreless in the final four innings as the G-Braves rallied.
Down 3-1 in the top of the fifth, Gwinnett scored four runs thanks to RBIs from Matt Young, Freddie Freeman and Diory Hernandez. At the end of the inning, the G-Braves had a 5-3 lead they didn’t relinquish.
Freeman (2-for-5, three RBIs) also hit his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot in the ninth inning. Hernandez went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Young was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Gwinnett takes on Toledo in game two of a four-game series today night at 7 p.m. Toledo will start RHP L.J. Gagnier (3-3, 3.50 ERA) while the G-Braves send LHP Jose Ortegano (2-4, 5.14 ERA) to the mound.
