LAWRENCEVILLE -- Sixty firefighters battled sweltering temperatures while wrangling a fire that scorched a Lawrenceville apartment building Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The blaze caused major damages to an eight-unit building in the Richmond at Fairway apartments on Fairway Oak Drive, located off Club Drive. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said all eight units in the two-story building were occupied. Apartment management and the American Red Cross are assisting those displaced.
Firefighters received a 911 call from a neighbor at 3:16 p.m. and had the fire knocked down about 45 minutes later, Rutledge said.
"Needless to say, the building's heavily damaged," he said. "There is some concern about structural integrity of the building."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters working the blaze were rotated through a makeshift rehab area with shade aplenty, where they downed water and Gatorade for replenishment.
"It's a hot day, but our firefighters are doing well," Rutledge said.
