BUFORD -- Three Gwinnett residents died late Thursday when the truck they were riding in veered off a Buford road and landed in a stream, police said.
The 2007 Chevrolet pickup was eastbound on Doc Hughes Road, near Beyers Landing Drive, when it left the roadway, struck a fence and guardrail, dropped off an embankment, and came to rest in small waterway about 11:45 p.m., police said.
All three occupants died at the scene, police said. They were identified as Terry Hammock, 36, of Grayson, William Lewis, 27, of Buford and Chad Litton, 31, of Lawrenceville.
Police believe Hammock was driving.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly said alcohol and excessive speed may have factored in to the crash. It doesn't appear any other vehicles were involved, Kelly said.
The driver and one passenger were not wearing seat belts, he said. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's office will perform autopsies as part of an ongoing investigation.
Kelly noted that throughout the summer, Gwinnett police will be saturating various roadways and conducting special operations as a means to thwart impaired driving.
