SNELLVILLE -- An apparent drug-related robbery attempt in Snellville on Wednesday afternoon resulted in gunfire, a car in a ditch and two people shot, police said.

Five individuals are believed to have entered a home on the 3500 block of Spring Mesa Drive at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, in a robbery that "may have been motivated by drugs," Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly said.

They fled the scene in what appeared to be an old, rusted Oldsmobile -- that's when the residents of the home and the robbers exchanged fire, Kelly said.

The front seat passenger was shot in the head while the driver was shot in the hip, reportedly causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle on a sharp curve near Highpoint and Springdale Roads.

Police were arriving on the scene of the reported robbery when the vehicle crashed into the ditch, Kelly said.

"We don't know if (the robbery) was successful or interrupted," Kelly said. "Something motivated these individuals to flee the residence. When they got in the car, apparently they were shot."

The two unidentified injured individuals were rushed to the hospital. The man shot in the head was in critical condition.

Kelly said there was reason to believe that one individual from the car fled the scene, but that person "is not believed to be a danger to the community."

The two remaining individuals in the car were detained.

No one in the home was injured. Officers expected to make at least one arrest Wednesday in relation to the shooters at that scene, Kelly said.
