The Gwinnett Soccer Association Phoenix Red 94 U16 Boys won the GYSA State Cup on June 6 by defeating the Cobb Futbol Club 94 Gold 1-0 in overtime.
Defender Matthew McGlammery scored with 9 minutes remaining in overtime for the deciding goal. The Phoenix Red 94 were lead by captains Austin Smith and Sol Samuel, leading scorer Nick Muntean (three goals, one assist), and goalkeeper Evan Flowers (four shutouts, one goal allowed in five games).
Other members of the team are Grace Balegamire, Cody Clark, Abdikafi Hassan, Taylor Henry, Christian LaRoche, Will Lowndes, Ryan Mozzone, Daniel Samuel, Josiah Saydee, James Serpas and Celso Torres.
The team is coached by Mike Farnham and Merck Smith.
The GSA Phoenix Red 94 will represent Georgia at the USYSA National Championship Series Region III Regionals in Baton Rouge, La., June 18-23.
Angels reach district finals
Atlanta Fire United’s U-16 Angels girls played in the State Rec Cup Championship on May 22-23 in Columbus. The Angels played eight games over two weekends to reach the championship game.
Team members are: Charlotte Armstrong, Bianca Babichenko, Emily Birch, Sion Chung, Olivia Demario, Morgan Foley, Amanda Helton, Cathrine Mainous, Wendy Palmer, Jamie Pyle, Emily Stryker, Melissa Sullivan, Julie Trawick, Nicole Van Leeuween, Sidney Woodruff and Amy Zawada. The team is coached by Don Trawick and Robert Palmer.
Gwinnett players make national lacrosse team
Four players from Gwinnett County have been selected from 100 metro Atlanta prospects for the Adidas Travel Team in Georgia.
All will be high school seniors in the fall. Alex Squires is a student at Collins Hill High School. Harrison Cheely goes to Wesleyan and Cory Hall and Gary Heusel attend Peachtree Ridge High School. The Georgia team will compete for the 2010 Adidas National Championship title at the National Lacrosse Classic from July 5-8 in Maryland. Teams from across the nation will compete in the event, which is intended to be a showcase for NCAA lacrosse programs.
