Man found guilty of murder

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Why Devin Grell shot and killed what some have described as his best friend could remain a mystery -- but it will be something he'll have to think about as he spends the rest of his life behind bars.

Grell, a former Dacula High School student, was found guilty of murder Friday and was sentenced to life plus 25 years in the 2008 slaying of 20-year-old Donny Edouard.

In July 2008, Edouard was at the two-story home he shared with family members on the outskirts of Lawrenceville. His father, younger sister, cousin and girlfriend were there with him.

The two being old chums, friends say, Grell dropped in, only to fatally shoot Edouard in the face.

On the way out, Grell shot Brianna Morgan, Edouard's girlfriend and a key witness during the week-long trial, in the hip and ear.

Grell was arrested just a day after the double shooting.

Prior to that, Grell had been out of prison for only five months -- he served four years of a six-year sentence for stabbing a fellow Dacula student in the stomach at school in 2003.

Edouard had visited him at jail during that time.

After two full days of deliberation, a jury Friday found Grell guilty of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and burglary.
