DULUTH -- Maintenance crews at a Duluth apartment complex discovered the body of an apparent gunshot victim in a wooded area behind an electrical box this morning.
Police believe the fatal shooting may have happened in the waning hours of Thursday evening at the Bridgewater Apartments on Satellite Boulevard, when residents recalled hearing gunfire but didn't call police, officials said.
The unidentified victim is a black man in his late teens or early 20s, who appeared to have been shot at least once, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly.
Police don't believe the victim lived at the complex.
No suspects have been identified, though police at the scene detained two men who turned out to be friends or family members of the victim. They feared he had met harm in the area and were searching for him, Kelly said.
"It appears they were suspicious something had happened to this individual," Kelly said.
Maintenance crews found the body about 10 a.m., Kelly said.
Residents of Bridgewater gathered in the noon hour Friday for peeks at teams of crime scene investigators and detectives who examined and photographed the body, found in brush beneath a canopy of pines.
Police suspect the man was killed at or near where he lay, across the street from the complex's office, a sand volleyball court and ornate gazebo.
Kelly urged the public to come forward with information about the shooting.
"It was still daylight, so it's very possible someone saw something," he said.
Kandi Hambrick, mother of three and Bridgewater resident, said news of the body put her on edge.
"There's no problems (in the complex), ever," she said. "I don't know if I'm going to stay here. I have children. I work at night, and that's scary."
