Lawrenceville native retires from Air Force

LAWRENCEVILLE — Col. Phil Lovin Samples received his retirement orders from the U.S. Air Force during a ceremony May 20 at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse.

Samples, who was raised in Lawrenceville and graduated from Central Gwinnett High School, served in the Air Force for 27 years. He ended his career as the commander of the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group, located in Southwest Asia.

Samples, who had a doctorate in pharmacy from the Medical College of Georgia, served as the top Air Force pharmacist and the 10th consultant to the Air Force surgeon general for pharmacy.

During his career, he received several awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal with six oak leaf clusters, the Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He also received the first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 from the Society of Air Force Pharmacy and the Andrew Craigie Award in 2008 from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.

Samples now lives in Missouri.

Snellville center hosts workshop for caregivers

SNELLVILLE — SarahCare of Snellville, an adult day care center, is hosting a six-week educational series titled “Powerful Tools for Caregivers.”

The workshop was developed by Legacy Health System’s Caregiver Services Department to provide family caregivers with tools to increase their self-care and confidence. It will be presented by Adrienne Noble, an information and referral specialist with Gwinnett County Senior Services.

The workshop will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from today through July 15. SarahCare of Snellville is located at 1567 Janmar Road, Suite 200, in Snellville.

Fair to support Georgia SPCA

SUWANEE — Barks and Crafts Fair, an event benefiting the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at North Gwinnett High School.

The event will feature live music, psychic readings, craft booths and food. The Georgia SPCA will have a booth with adoptable pets and microchipping.

Leashed pets are welcome to attend.

North Gwinnett High School is located at 20 Level Creek Road, at the intersection of Level Creek Road and Suwanee Dam Road, in Suwanee.
