DULUTH -- A suspected hit-and-run driver made his situation worse Wednesday, eluding police officers and hitting four more vehicles on Interstate 85 South before finally being taken into custody, police said.
The driver, not identified Wednesday night, was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run incident "in the Buford area" before an officer tracked the vehicle down going south on I-85 near Old Peachtree Road about 12:30 p.m., Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly said.
The driver was involved in another hit-and-run there, and the responding officer attempted to pull the vehicle over.
The driver appeared to be cooperating, slowing down and safely negotiating his way from the HOV lane to the right side of the road -- before speeding off again, Kelly said.
After originally pursuing, the officer backed off in attempt to encourage the suspect to not affect any other drivers.
To no avail.
The suspect went on to intentionally ram three more vehicles before the final collision ended the pursuit, Kelly said.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody, Kelly said, and faces "multiple counts of aggravated assault as well as a plethora of traffic-related criminal charges."
